Health and nutrition: Inspection findings from academic year 2024 to 2025

Health and Nutrition Inspectors (HNI) monitor the fulfilment of statutory duties under the Health Promotion and Nutrition Act 2007 (the HPN Act) and compliance with the Nutritional Requirements for Food and Drink in Schools (Scotland) Regulations 2020 (Nutritional Regulations). These regulations apply to food provision across the school day. Education authorities and managers of grant-aided schools are ultimately responsible for ensuring that all food and drink provided in their schools comply fully with the Regulations. However, everyone involved with providing food and drink on school premises can play a part in supporting compliance by making themselves aware of the requirements set out in the Regulations.

HNI join a number of inspections of primary, secondary and special schools across all local authorities in Scotland. As well as providing ongoing advice to the Scottish Government, HNI support improvement and build capacity in school food provision and wider aspects of whole-school approaches to food, nutrition and health promotion through the sharing of inspection findings with schools and local authorities.
